John Cawelti

One of the media theorists that I have done some research into is John Cawelti, The theories that he created focused on genre, he made the statement that film genres are a myth. If a certain genre is popular it is due to the value that the society has. The film frozen has been used as an example of this, the popularity of the film lead to it being placed at the fifth most popular film in the box office. John
said that the popularity of the film would have given society some implications. The fact that the film was so popular denotes the fact that as a society we all love the fairy tail genre not matter how old we are. Due to frozen being watched by a younger generation it would also lead to parents and siblings watching and enjoying the film themselves. Another reason why Frozen was so successful as sometimes people like to have a film that is easy to watch, you don't have to thinking about what is going on throughout the film in order to understand what the storyline is and why certain events have occurred.  The typical storyline that occurs during fairy tail films is that the princess will fall in love and end up living happily ever after once overcoming many different problems, however during Frozen it is the love that the two sisters have for each other that overcomes the many different problems they face. This is also a good life lesson for children as it shows how you should also put family first no matter who else is around you and what they are doing for you. The fact that family love is the dominant theme throughout the film shows that the audiences watching the film feel like family is very important also. The musical element to Frozen would have also caused the popularity of the film to increase as the songs are all very catchy which then causes people to get the stuck in their heads. People may also hear the song before they have seen the film and they wont to know what the meaning behind the film is which then causes them to watch it. Having songs in films means there are more marketing opportunities for the film, the film will be more and more recognised as the songs will be playing on the radio, music channels and CDs that the children purchase.
