Evaluation: How effective is the combination of your main products and ancillary tasks?

The next thing I've looked at when looking into how effective my media products are is synergy, this is the way I am going to be selling my product through the use of different mediums. The poster and review page are the two of my products in which I need to market to get the attention of my target audience. The poster will be displayed in public areas that are going to be seen my target audience, as well as the general public as it may appeal to them also. The main purpose of a film poster and review page are to promote the film as best as possible, they need to make people to see it and want to watch the film. I made both of my media texts simple as the public don't want to see a poster thats hard to get the point of as they are walking past it. You want to see something that is giving a clear message, once you have seen it you will remember it and be able to search up the film. Due to my poster and review page having similarities between the two people will be able to see that they are about the same film even at a glance, or if they see one after the after they will remember seeing them and make the link that they are promoting the same film.

Here are the different ways I want to promote my film:

I like the three ways in which I have promoted my film, however this is how major films are promoted. Meaning that I would promote my film in this way if I had the budget for it however as I've made an independent film is meaning that I don't have the money to promote my film in this way. The main way in which I will be promoting my film is through the use of social media meaning that I will create a twitter, Instagram and Facebook page for my film, all of which are free. My film review page is going to be shown in magazines with the poster shown on the front page of the magazine giving people an insight into the film. The film magazine that I want my review page to be featured in is Empire, there is not a direct film magazine that my target audience would read. However teenagers spend half their lives online and on social media and Empire have there own website meaning that while promoting my film on social media I can also add the link to the website with the review on meaning that they will be able to read it online.

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products

My Film:

When starting to create my film the first thing that I looked into were the conventions that are typically followed my short films and then genre of my choice. Due to short films not being massively popular there was not masses amounts of detail online about the conventions which meant that we went through as a class what conventions we were going to follow, we were also given handouts by teachers.

Typical conventions of short films:

  • Limited amounts of characters
  • Limited amounts of dialogue
  • Limited amount of locations
  • Having a twist to keep the story line interesting
  • Small budget
  • Length 5-10 minutes
  • Everyday situations to make them relatable
  • Protagonist is identified

Typical conventions of teen drama films:

  • Clique of 'Mean Girls'
  • Set in a high school
  • Teen issues ( Someone being an outcast)

Typical conventions of a mystery:

  • Murder that is commit by the protagonist who is unknown till the end.
  • Someone is trying to solve the crime.
  • Music to go along with the theme of the scene.

Out of the conventions that have been listed above I used many of them to ensure thet my film was going to be conventional however I also challenged and developed them in order to ensure my film would still be successful.

Limited characters:
I followed this convention as my film only has 5 characters in. Some may look at this and feel like the is still too many as the film that they created only had 2/3 charters however I needed that many characters in order for my film to make sense. Using Pretty Little Lairs as inspiration for my film I wanted to have 5 mean girls however this would  have meant that my film would have then had 7 different characters which would have been too much.

Limited dialogue:
This is one of the conventions that I challenged as I needed to have a lot of dialogue in my film in order for it to make sense and the story line to not become confusing. However towards to end of the film I used text on the screen to show Hannah's thoughts rather than using more dialogue in order to describe her thoughts and feelings.

Limited locations:
I followed this convention as I only had three different locations in my film. I used school which I filmed in many different rooms and areas, my bedroom and the woods. It was easier to only use a limited amount of locations also as getting my actors to travel around to many different locations would have been time consuming and could also be very costly.

Plot twist:
I used the convention in order to make my film even better as the plot most was that Lilly was the killer rather than 'black hoodie'. This followed the conventions of short films as well as keeping my audience interested.

Small budget:
Due to producing this film for my coursework I did not have any budget, all he actors that I used were students meaning that they featured in my film as a favour to me and all of the equipment that I used in order to produce the film had been borrowed. In order to thank my actors for taking part in my film I brought them all hot drinks after filming in the woods had taken place.

Length:
My film was 4:23 minutes which is just under 5 minutes however this is due to being created for coursework purposes. Other short films that are created have more recourses and time to create a long film compared to the time limit that I had in order to ensure I was meeting all of the deadlines being set my teachers.

Everyday situations:
I developed this convention as many parts of my short film were reliable to everyday however there were also other parts that weren't relatable. The fact that the girls were in school was relatable to teenage life, although its not a good things people being picked out and picked on in schools due to girls being nasty. However the fact of reviving animus texts massages and being killed by one of your closest friends isn't something that occurs in an everyday situation.

Protagonist is identified:
Throughout my film the protagonist is not made clear until the very end. At first its thought to be Megan even though she is contently tellings the girls that its not her and she's on their side. The assumption then shifts to 'black hoodie' as megan and them are sen to be having a disagreement about something. Its the revealed at the end that its Lilly by the text that Megan receives and her following Hannah towards the woods.

I followed all three of the typical conventions of teen drama films. As well as being set in a high school it was also set in a bedroom which looked like a stereotypical girls bedroom with pink walls as and massive mirror making the scene relatable to the audience watching. There is also the stereotypical teen drama dynamics of the girls with three of them all ganging up on picking on her. A development of this convention was the fact that Lilly was trying to stick up for Megan as much as possible, normally the two other girls just go along with what the ring leader says as much as possible.

I also followed all of the conventions of mystery films. I looked into the conventions of both genres due to my film being a teen mystery film, I developed the convention of having someone solving the crime and had someone keeping another person safe instead. Rather than a scene where the crime was looked into and solved I had Megan trying her best to keep Hannah safe and telling her to not follow the text messages that she was receiving. This made it more interesting and less confusing then having a scene where the murder to investigated into and solved, By doing this I was also following a typical short film convention as trying to solve the crime would have made the film even longer and had more dialogue included to ensure that the storyline didn't get confused.

Film Poster:

My Inspiration-

My Poster:

The typical conventions of a film poster include:

  • The title being the biggest thing on the poster
  • One main image (Main Character)
  • Main Quote
  • Film ratings
  • Date of film release
  • Billing block

Where I have used these conventions on my own film poster:

Conventions used:

I wanted to make my poster as simple as the picture that I have used for my inspiration. I chose against adding the date in which the film comes out due to being an intending film the poster would be out at the same time in which the film had been released as people may forget to look into watching the film if it was long time after seeing the poster. I also don't think adding 'Coming Soon' is pointless as when the film finally gets realised people may think that its been out for longer than it has due to seeing the poster a long time before it was actually released.

Due to my film being a mystery I didn't want to give anything major about the film out from the poster or the plot in which takes place. I chose that particular poster as my inspiration as it has the same theme that I wanted my poster to have also with the woods becoming the dominate feature making the main character in the picture look unsafe by the surroundings that they are in.

When is came to the main cover image there are two different conventions that I could have followed. The first was the typical convention of having just the main character on the cover image. The next one the convention that teen drama films follow where they have the three main mean girls on the cover. The research that chose just to have Hannah the main character on the cover was due to while doing my research I felt like the covers with just the main character on the front looked more professional and didn't give much of the story line away meaning that the audience would be more intrigued to want to watch it. Whereas having all three of the girls on the image makes the cover look less simple, it also makes the film look like a typical film where the girls are just nasty to each other with nothing else happening whereas my short film isn't a typical teen drama film as it has the mystery twist to it.

I feel like the overall look of my short film poster is very simple however had included everything that I wanted to include in it, I've kept it as simple as possible to prevent any of the storyline being given away from the poster. Rather than challenging or developing any of the conventions I kept to all of them apart from having the release date on the front. I also didn't add a rating on the front also as many other posters I used during my research and planning didn't include this feature either.

Film Review Page:

My Film Review Page:

My inspiration:

Typical conventions of a Film Review Page:

  • Film name
  • Quotes
  • Short synopsis of the film
  • Critiques about the film
  • Images from the film

When doing the research and planning towards my film review page I looked particularly at the review pages that had a smaller amount of writing. Not because I didn't want to have to write loads and wanted to fill my whole page up with pictures but due to the fact I had my target audience in mind. Do to my film being aimed at teenagers they aren't going to want to read a review page that is full up of massive paragraphs of writing. Also due to my film only being around 4 minutes the more and more writing that I have on my review page is the more I am going to be giving away about my film.

The conventions that I have used and where:

The title of my film is the largest piece of text that I have used on my film causing it to stand out the most. I copied and pasted the title from my short film poster to ensure that the font and colour was identical. This means that once an individual sees each of the media texts simultaneously they will be able to see the links and see that the two things are simialt and link into each other, rather than having everything completely different. I also did the same with the quote ' Trust No One' that I've added to both of the media texts. Again I didn't add the release date to my review page as when they audience are reading the review the film would already be out meaning that when they look into the film to watch it they will be able to watch it straight away.

The article itself includes a brief overview of what the film is about and mentions the fact that Hannah plays the lead role to attract a large audience of her fans to watch it as she is very successful, I have used her to promote my film as much as possible due to not having a large budget in order to market my film. I wanted to keep what I said about the film as simple as possible and let the collage of picture used to sell the film as they don't give the storyline away like having a large amount of text would have given a lot more away. I selected those particular screen shots from the film as they are from all different locations and include all of the characters which shows that they storyline isn't just based in one place with a few characters included. I particularly liked the close up of Hannah as it shows that she is being targeted and its through they use of social media which is widely used my teenagers making the film even more relatable, the facial expression clearly shows that she is not happy with what she can see on the screen.

I developed the conventions used my by double page spread I used as inspiration as I made everything look clearer, the page that I used as inspiration had many things over lapping each other. Which I did also however I used more square boxes making it look more formal as they inspiration pages looks slightly childish however I wanted mine to look a lot more cleaner in a way and simple but still using the same ideas. I feel like due to all of the solid boxes being used its a lot more clear to follow and read, everything neatly fits into place on the page.

Evaluation: How did you use media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?

Which aspects of programs were useful?

The fact that I was able to share and look over other peoples work due to using online platforms like blogger, YouTube and Prezi were massively helpful, as well as synergy. The fact that I always have access to the internet whether it be on a phone or laptop meant that I always had access to the online platforms. Using apple products together e.g iPhone and mac made it even easier to get research pages and photos that had been taken shared across as sometimes importing large amounts of media can be time consuming. This also lead to the process of getting my media product uploaded to YouTube in order to share faster also.

Final Cut Pro: Although it took me some getting used to at first Final Cut Pro was very easy to use and did exactly what I wanted it to. I tried to use another program which is on an apple mac 'iMovie' however didn't understand how to use it, also their was a lot poorer quality in the editing standard.

Final Cut Pro easily allowed me to add and take away sound from clips, I also layer sounds on top of each other during one scene. Another feature that I was able to do easily was editing text, once I understood how to writing feature I was then able to get the text to enter and leave the screen simultaneously. This made it look like the thoughts were entering and leaving the screen as Hannah was thinking them.

My Philosophy:

One of the most annoying and time consuming things about using technology is waiting for the computer to respond to what you have asked it to do. If you have been on it for a long time or have asked it to do a serious of different things at once is often goes slow, or shows the loading sign which then means you can not do anything else until its finished.

Things I could have improved myself:
  • I knew that I was going to be using Final Cut Pro so should have learnt how to use it before starting to edit.
  • Plan things out on paper first as I did all of my work on a computer.
  • Saved and sorted my editing progress on a memory stick or uploaded it to YouTube as I only have one progress video uploaded.
  • Leave enough time for technological errors, like my short film uploading it to YouTube as it took a lot longer than I thought it would.
Where did I use technology the most:
  • I consistently used media throughout my coursework. May people planned out there story boards and call sheets on paper first however I did everything using technology as I found it easier. I was dependant on technology throughout my whole media coursework.

Evaluation: What have you learned from audience feedback?

Throughout the creation of my media products I have developed my ideas due to the audience feedback that has been gained. Without the help of audience feedback I would have found it a lot harder to develop my idea and think of different ways I could change what I had created in order to make them even better. Having audience feedback allows you to have a range of opinions about the work in which has been created, showing you what works and why along with what doesn't work and how/why it should be changed. As soon as I gained feedback from my audience I made the changes that had been suggested and showed them once again asking if any further changes should be made.

When asking for audience feedback I went to my target audience which are people that are around the age of 13-19 as they are the individuals that I want my media product to be targeting. The main character Hannah, is an attractive teenager herself which means that she is going to attract the attention of teenage girls of the same age of herself and teenage boys as the typically watch things due to the main character being attractive. This means that my film is going to be watched by both genders however I am mainly targeting a female audience. Although my film is following a similar storyline to Pretty Little Lairs I am expecting my film to have a niche market due to being a film created on a small budget, this means that I am not going to have large budget behind the marketing of the film like major films do. Due to filming my film in a school environment it makes it a lot more relatable to the target audience as that is what they do on a daily basis, also having three girls ganging up on Megan together is stereotypical of most teen drama films. These are two of the many aspects that my target audience said that they liked the most about my film when gaining audience feedback from them. As well as teenagers my film will also appeal to parents as they may watch the film at the same time as their children meaning aspects of the film also needs to interest them. When parents watched my film the most appealing character to them was Lilly as she tried to make the situation fair as she wanted Hannah to see that there could be more to the story and that Megan shouldn't be treated unfairly. Although the actions that Lilly took at the end of the film were wrong it has clearly been done for entertainment and wouldn't be copied by the audience.

Here is a short clip of one the audience feedbacks that I got straight after the person had watching my short film for the very first time. The reaction that I got showed me without them having to say anything that my end product had been successful as they were shocked by the ending and complemented many of the different effects used like the typing on the screen in order to help the storyline to be understood. I also got feedback on what else I could have done better to show that although the film had been enjoyed there are always changes that can be made in order to make you work even better.

My preferred method of gaining audience feedback was through conversations or over text messages where I had screenshot my progress and asked them what they thought. I was going to create surveys and questionnaires and go onto to analyse all of the data created and make tables etc to show my results. However this can become very time consuming, you may end up spending so long planning questions to ask the audience and creating the result tables that you have long enough to create your final products as best as you wanted to. I liked having conversations a lot more with people also as you could ask further questions about what they mean and how they think it should be done, as when using questionnaires and surveys they can have closed questions. Meaning you end up with a yes or no answer and no follow up about how you should go about making the changes that they feel like should be made. When asking for feedback I often made the changes while the person was there to see if the improved outcome was better. When asking for feedback from people over text this was dominantly for the ancillary tasks. I first created a rough idea of that I wanted the outcome to look like and asked for feedback from that point onwards. I would ask them if I was unsure about anything from the size of the front to if they feel like the review written was adequate. Due to technology being such a massive part of teenagers lives this was so much easier then planning to do interviews with people as the responses that I got were pretty much instant and I could then message them once again once I had made the changes and carry on the processes of getting feedback and making these changes until we were both happy with the outcome.

Film Feedback:

When asking my audience for feedback this one the video that I showed them. I didn't want to show them the absolute final product as they may say that I needed to change the way scenes had been filmed in order to make the storyline easier to understand, which did occur. As well as asking my target audience I also asked my media teacher who gave me a lot of help and direction of what I should change about the camera angles etc to make it even better. Due to not being finished I knew that I had things in mind that I was going to add so while watching it I informed the person watching what I was going to do and the way in which I was going to do it. These things are as follows:

  • The first scene thats the empty woods is going to have the title appear.
  • As Hannah and Megan receive the text messages what is being said will be shown on the screen.
  • As Hannah is getting ready to go to the woods there will be a song playing in order to fit the mood.
  • Before Hannah dies there will be a long shot of the woods followed by a scream and a gun shot.
  • The last 6 seconds shouldn't be there.
  • The film will end with credits being shown on the screen.
First person:

The scene where the title is going to be added doesn't need to be as long as it seems a bit dragged out and it wasting time as short films aren't meant to be very long. The first scene is very good however the fact that they are in detention isn't made very clear so you may want it to be mentioned in the dialogue or written on the board. After Hannah receives the text message there is a crossing over between emily and hannah talking which makes it hard to hear, also there needs to be a sound match between the two scenes as Hannahs voice sounds quieter to the rest of the dialogue that has occurred.

Overall I love the idea that you are following and am looking forward to seeing the finished product with all of the features that you have mentioned and with the ideas that I have given you.

Second Person:
I feel you need to trim a lot of your clips in order to ensure your film runs as smooth as possible without seeing the parts where your actors are about to start talking. Also there are some scenes that would work well with a transition added between them, for example the move from the woods to the classroom should have a transition between the two different locations. As Hannah is getting ready to go to the woods having some sort of voice over would be effective get an insight into her thoughts.

The camera angles as Lilly and Emily are having their conversation looks so professional especially the way the corridor behind Lilly is all out of focus. You have also used a different range of camera angles as they are walking towards the woods and the point of view shots are extremely effective, it makes you feel although you are walking towards yourself building the suspense of what is going to occur as they get there.

Media Teacher:

The classroom scene has a lot of dialogue in it which does make the story easy to follow however there have not been enough camera angles used.  Having a close up off what the three girls are looking at on Hannah's phone would give you another camera angle it would also give the audience an insight as to what the three girls are talking about. When Lilly is talking to Hannah about being nice to Megan you should have close up of her face. There are a few parts where the scene could be cut a few seconds before you have in order to make it run smoother, an effective way of doing this is to blade the scene which gets you a sharper cut. Once you have added all of the features that you have mentioned to me and a few more camera angles the film is going to look very professional.

I love the camera angles that have been used especially the ones in the woods you have shown clear a clear improvement of camera work as the film has progressed. The storyline is very interesting and kept me engaged throughout. I can see that you have put large amounts of effort into all of the filming that has taken place also organisation skills have shown that you can clearly manage a group of people to do what you need them to.

After I took this advice into account I then made the correct changes in order to improve my work as best as possible. When the title is shown on screen I also edited in a part of the music that is put over the film at the end, I also shorted the scene down to save time and to apply what I was told during my audience feedback. In order to make it clear that the four girls are in detention I added text to the top of the screen I wanted this to be kept for a good amount of time to allow the audience to see that it is there. I also added in a close up of Hannah, Lilly and Emily all looking at the phone. I decided to use Megan's Instargram to show the fact that they don't like her which is why they are so nasty when she walks in. My media teacher asked me to do a close up of Lilly's face when they are talking however she died her hair as she thought that filming was all finished however I still wanted another camera angle to be used, so I used a point of view shot from Lilly's point of view, as this means that I have still used another camera angle. When Hannah is getting ready for the woods rather than having a voice over to how she is feeling I chose to have writing added to the screen as this gets the same effect and causing the audience to concentrate more on what is going on as they have to consistanly be reading what is being shown on the screen. Once I then added everything that I wanted to my film I then when through and edited all of the sound ensuring that it was all at the same volume and that there was not any crossing over of speech which meant that it becomes difficult to hear. I think blade a few scenes and  made the clips run smoother into each other by taking a few seconds off the begging and end of them so that you can't see where the actors have started and stopped talking. I also added transitions between a few of the scenes.

Film poster:

When creating my film poster I first did some research into other successful film posters that had been created, I then deconstructed them to get a full unstinting of the conventions that they had used. My first draft of my poster was just to get a visual idea for myself to see what I wanted. While taking the pictures for my poster I was able to get instant feedback from Hannah, I started editing the pictures while she was with me which meant that she was telling me what edits that she liked the most and why. Once I finalised editing the picture I sent my target audience a few of the different edits and asked which one they liked. I then used the one that had the majority vote and that I liked the most.

As you can see my double page spread has a lot of alterations done to it before I was happy with my end result. Each step on the way I was asking for feedback from my target audience. The main things that I was told to change was the front and size of the writing that I had chosen. The first draft that I created I did in order to get a basic idea of what I wanted the colour scheme to look like. The main feedback that I for from my second edit of the poster was the fact that the top of the 'Trust No One' had been cut off. The reason in which I chose this front was to signify the fact that the trust Hannah had in Lilly had been cut hence why the writing has also been cut, however the feedback I was given said they found it difficult to read and didn't look right hence why I then changed it. They said that the explanantion I had towards using the front was good however was only understood once I had explained it to them otherwise it just looked like it wasn't meant to be like that. The second thing that was commented on was the boldness on the title 'Betrayed', I asked a friend who did media last year and they gave me some website suggestions of where I can get interesting fonts from. This where I then got the final font that was used. Another font that I got offline was the one for the credits at the bottom of the poster which I asked a class mate about once giving them feedback on their own poster.

Film review page:

Like wise with the film poster I gained my audience feedback in the same way, asking people in person what they thought have the work that had been created and sending screenshots of my progress so far. Again the main aspect of the poster that I the audience picked up on was the text, when showing a group of people in my media set my first draft the main point that was picked up on was the lack of writing that I had on the page. After showing them the magazine in which I was using the conventions of the understood why it looked the way that it did however this lead me to then look into the text that I had added to my poster and change what was written adding more to it. Also The way in which the text had been formatted had been picked up on meaning that I changed it to look more like a real magazine rather than just a paragraph. Everyone that I asked said they liked the way in which the pictures had been formatted meaning that I didn't need to make any changes to them at all.

With all of the three media texts I then asked people who had not seen them mid product what there thoughts were. I always asked them if they felt like what I had produced looked professional and something that would see on youtube/ short of the week and as a poster and everyone that I asked agreed that they did look professional. This then meant I didn't need to make any further changes to the products that I had created.
Here is one of the responses that I got from people that saw my media texts for the first time:

Person one: Wow! Your short films looks so professional, you can't tell that it has all been filmed at different times as all of the actors have got the same costume on and having there/ hair/ make up the same. The storyline is so engaging and made me want to carry on watching till the end especially as the suspense was building up as Hannah was getting ready to leave. The camera angles are all very thought about especially when Lilly and Emily are having the conversation together. The poster and double page spread are also vert professional and after seeing the professional magazine and poster that you used I can see that if they were real products they would be very successful.

I found audience feedback one of the most important things while creating my media product as I am creating the product in order to appeal to my target audience, and if they didn't like what I was doing or felt like something needed to be changed and I didn't listen to them then my product was not meeting the reason that it was being created for. Also people see things in different ways and will you tell you to develop an idea that you have in a way that you would have never thought about doing for yourself. I always asked honest people that would tell me the truth so if something that I was doing didn't look good they would tell me stop but also an idea of how to make it look better.

Double Page Spread planning

As one of my last ancillary tasks I need to create a double page spread that would be featured in a magazine. In order to start this process and gain an insight into what conventions are included in double page spreads. Before looking into my own genre of double page spreads I looked at a general range to determine what conventions are used throughout the pages and what features I need to include in my own in order for it to be successful.

From all of the film review pages above the main features include having main images that are action shots from the film. Meaning that the images have been taken part way through the film not from a separate photo shoot. This means that when creating my own review page the images that will be used will be screen shots from the actual film not pictures that I have made my actors pose for like the image on the film poster is. The images are also not very edited with things like filters on them meaning that when adding my own images I may brighten them up slightly however not do any other editing to them like was done on the image for the film poster. Due to my film only being a short film I will not have as much to say about it in comparison to major films without giving the storyline away before they have watched it, due to this and the pictures I have in mind that I will be able to use I feel like my short film poster will follow similar conventions as the first and last film review pages that I have added above. Although these are major film posters and I have created a short film when looking for short film review pages they are mainly students work, so these best work that I can use is the pictures that have been added above.

Film Poster Progress

As well as creating a short film my course work also involved creating a film poster and double page spread. Like shown in my last post in order to create my short film poster I did some research into other film and short film posters that had been created in order to ensure that I was using features that were going to be conventional. The poster that I used in order see what conventions had been used and worked successfully is the one below.

I choose to use this film poster rather than any others as I felt like it was the most fitting to my short film.

When creating my poster I started the editing process on iPhoto as I used the filters that they have last year on my music magazine so knew which ones that I liked and how to use the editing system. Last year I did try to use different software's like photo shop however found that they were too complicated and there were other apps that were more simple that were able to do what i wanted to achieve also.

This image is the original imagine where there has not been any filters added to it.

The second image has a filter on it called 'instant', I also slightly enhanced the picture but not massively.

This image is the one that I decided to use as the final image for the poster. The filter that I used on it is called 'transfer'. I also made the picture brighter, increase the colour saturation it it and enhanced it a lot more than I had done on the previous picture above.

Once the editing of the image was finished I went onto adding text to the image, previously I used pixlr when creating my music magazine however the software is hard to use and does not let you undo anything. I also choose not to use this software again as the only thing I was going to be adding to my picture was text and I didn't like many of the font choices that pixlr has to offer. This time I simply added my images onto pages and added my text to the image through the use of text boxes. I looked at many different font websites online in order to find the text that I thought would look best on my poster this involved a lot of searching and downloading of texts. My poster had many different fonts and font colours added to it before I got to the final result.

This was the very first draft that I created of my short film poster, however there are many different things that I didn't like about it. The like 'Dont trust anyone' is missing the ' from don't however I did start using pixlr in order to add the text so once this had been added I was unable to edit it once again. I also don't like the phrase so on my second draft chose to change it to something that sounded more interesting. The font and colour of the title of the film 'Betrayed' does not stand out as much as it should, the font of the word is very basic I also faded the word slightly which then prevents it from being as bold as it should. The colour of the word does not fit in with the colour scheme of anything else that is on the image. Due to being on pages the names that it doesn't recognise red lines are shown under them which I have failed to remove.

There are two main changes that I have occurred from the last picture is the font and colour of the headings. Ive also changed 'don't trust anyone' to 'trust no one' as i felt like it sounded more engaging and interesting. I liked the font styles of the 'Trust No One' however when gaining audience feedback many people commented on the fact that the top of the letters had been cut off. I personally liked this effect as it denoted the fact that the trust had been cut just like the top of the letters had however many people thought that they had been cut off by mistake during the editing process which shows that the fact the top of the letters had been cut off just looked odd. I changed the font of the word 'Betrayed' to something that is more bold however the letters were all very close together which meant that they did not stretch out over a lot of the poster, I tried to make it bigger however it enlarged it width ways which has then lead to the credits at the bottom being pushed lower on the poster cutting the web address off.

The changes that have been made to this poster is the font of the 'Trust No One' it is much more dominant and is a lot more readable as from the audience feedback gained people also said that they were unable to read it and only noticed it at second glance. The word 'Betrayed' is also a lot more dominant with the font being a lot more fitting to the genre, the letters being bigger and spaces at length and width ways, rather than just width like the previous poster, causes it to be the most dominate aspect of the post. The off white/ to grey colour is also a lot more fitting to the colour scheme of the poster in comparison to the purple colour used before. I did try to match the colour of the wording to the colour of the sky however didn't like the outcome that I obtained. The credits have been the one aspect of the poster that have been changed the least however this time they are no longer cut off the bottom of the poster and the read line from the names that pages did not recognise has been removed.

Analysing pervious film posters

In order to get an idea of what conventions short film posters have I have looked at previous professional work. By analysing pervious short film and film posters I can then become familiar with the features that are used and what I need to add to my own short film poster that I am going to create.

As short films aren't very popular it was hard to find short film posters that were professional and not just a students work. Hence why I have used major film posters also as they have been successful which shows the conventions that the poster included were successful.

This film poster is one of my favourites that I have looked at as it is the most fitting to my short film. The wording at the top of the woods could say 'trust no one' which gives the audience an insight into the fact that someone during the film is going to break someone else's trust which is further denotes by the title of the film 'Betrayed'. As the ending of my film is also situated in the woods I could have Hannah walking into the woods without showing Maisie behind her so throughout the film the audience will be awake of the fact that the location is going to change from the school environment that it is in at the begging to the woods where something will occur. I don't want my film poster to look as dark and grey as this as it still needs to be appealing to my target audience so will have some colour in it in order to attract teenagers as they see it. The title of this poster almost looks like it is wind swept however I want mine to be just as dominant as it was at the start of my film.

The typical conventions of the poster is having all over the credits at the bottom in the centre as your eyes tend to follow the poster down so these will be one of the last things that are seen however they are below the main title which means they are still going to be read.

Another mystery film poster that I liked was this one, as it clearly shows that there are three main characters in the film with the two most dominant characters being female. If I used the same conventions as this poster I would have Hannah as the girl that you can see an outline of, Lilly as the girl who has the close up as she is the deceiving character throughout the film. The 'black hoodie' will then be the shadow as the film gives suggests that he is the person sending the unknown text messages and remains unknown throughout the film as they got Lilly to do the killing for them. However this poster would be harder to use as inspiration as a lot more editing would need to to take place, also since filming Lilly has had her hair dyed blonde which means that the imagine taken now would look different to how she looks during the film, which may lead to confusion and show the poster and film have all been created during different time periods.

Editing Process So Far

In order to edit my short film I used Final Cur Pro X. I have a mac book pro so in order to make editing easier I dowloaded  the 30 day free trial which meant that I was able to edit at home and not just at school on the school Mac Books. However due to only being a trial it meant that I had to ensure all of the editing was done and finished within the 30 days.

Final Cut Pro wasn't hard to use once I got the hang of what to do, if there was something that I didn't get or needed to I was able to ask a friend or google the problem which always lead to a solution.

One of the things that I edited into my short film the most was sound and text. With sound I took short sounds out of other clips I had filmed that I wasn't going to be using and added them into the scenes that I was using, an example of this is where 'black hoodie' hits his hand onto the lockers.
During this scene I muted the audio that went with the scene and added the girls talking from another scene, I then added a small clip of audio from the original scene which was 'Black Hoodie" banging the locker. By doing this it looked like the girls where having the conversation while Megan and 'black hoodie' were having there conversation. It also shows how quietly they were having there conversation as the only thing that two girls can hear is the banging of the lockers. This also showed that Megan and 'black hoodie' would not have heard what the girls were saying.

An example of where I have used typing is where Hannah is getting ready to go into the woods to meet the person that has been texting the girls. I added text onto the screen rather than having more speech as it created more of an atmosphere and shows what she is truly feeling without her having to have a conversation with someone about it. Once finding the typing style that I wanted it made it a lot easier to just keep adding the text as and when I wanted it to come up. You can easy change the amount of time that the text is shown by making the purple boxes longer and shorter.
